When you’re wearing BRACES that are cemented to your teeth like stainless steel or ceramic braces, you have to be careful about what you eat. This is because there are many types of FOODS THAT DON’T PLAY NICE WITH BRACES like crunchy chips, hard candy, and other chewy and gooey foods & treats.
Now that we’re heading into summer, there will be lots of outdoor barbecues and picnics to look forward to! To make sure those of you wearing braces won’t feel left out because you have to watch what you eat, we’ve put together a few tasty summer recipes below that are perfectly safe to eat with braces.
Fresh Corn Salad
The last thing your Clovis orthodontist wants you to eat is corn-on-the-cob because it’s a food you have to bite into using your front teeth, which can bend or break your archwire. The star of this recipe is fresh corn that’s been cut off the cob, making this salad safe to eat with braces.
Five ears of fresh corn, shucked
½ cup red onion, diced
3 tablespoons vinegar
3 tablespoons olive oil
½ teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ cup basil leaves, finely chopped
Cook the corn until done in a large pot of boiling salt water. When it’s cool, cut the kernels off the cob. Place the kernels in a large bowl with the all the other ingredients except the fresh basil. Toss the salad well. Just before serving, add the fresh basil and toss again. Enjoy!
Fresh Strawberry & Lemon Smoothie
When you need to cool down fast, this delicious smoothie will get the job done! Not only does it takes great, but it’s healthy too!
8 or 9 large strawberries
1 8-ounce container of lemon yogurt
1/3 cup orange juice
Put the strawberries in a plastic container and pop them in the freezer for about one hour. Then put the frozen strawberries, yogurt, and orange juice into a blender and blend until smooth. Pour in a tall glass and enjoy!
Hobo Dinner Foil Packets
If you know you’ll be going to a cookout where there will be chewy ribs and steaks served, you can put this meal together beforehand then just toss it on the grill once you arrive. This recipe makes four meal packets.
1 pound lean ground beef
1 package dry onion soup mix
4 small potatoes, peeled and sliced
2 carrots, peeled and sliced
1 onion, chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 teaspoon garlic powder
salt & pepper to taste
1 can cream of mushroom soup
Mix the ground beef with the dry onion soup mix then form four patties and set aside. In a large bowl, mix all the remaining ingredients together, except the mushroom soup. Spray four pieces of aluminum foil (about 12” x 18” each) with a non-stick cooking spray.
Next, place ¼ of the vegetable mixture in the center of each piece of foil and top each with one beef patty. Add two tablespoons of the cream of mushroom soup to the top of each patty. Seal the foil packets closed. Then put the packets on a hot grill and allow them to cook for about 35 to 40 minutes or until the potatoes and carrots are tender.
