Dental Hygiene Tips with Braces

ORTHODONTICS EXCLUSIVELY / OUR BLOG / DENTAL HYGIENE TIPS WITH BRACES

Dental Hygiene Tips with BracesBraces are a critical step towards revolutionizing your life with a healthy, beautiful new smile – but while you’re wearing them, you’ll need to be particularly careful about your oral hygiene. That’s because all the nooks and crannies that BRACES create in your mouth are ideal hiding places for food particles, bacteria, and plaque, which can corrode the enamel of your teeth over time, leading to cavities and dental decay that can completely derail your orthodontic treatment. At Orthodontics Exclusively, we’re proud to be a resource for all things related to orthodontic treatment in the Merced area – so here are our top tips for caring for teeth while wearing braces.

Step Up Your Brushing Schedule

When wearing braces, the regular routine of brushing twice a day and flossing once a day just won’t cut it. While you still only need to floss once a day, you should brush your teeth after any meal or snack. At a minimum, you should brush your teeth after breakfast, after lunch, after dinner, and before bed.

Keep a Braces Care Kit

Proper oral hygiene with braces requires keeping your teeth clean at all times, including when you’re out of the house. To help with that, we’d recommend making a braces care kit. Try making an easily portable pack containing a small toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, floss threaders, an interdental brush, dental wax, spare rubber bands, and anything else you might need to care for your braces. It’ll prove invaluable for keeping your teeth clean on the go!

Monitor Your Diet

In addition to oral hygiene, you’ll also need to watch what you eat to keep your teeth and braces happy. In general, you should avoid any foods that are particularly hard, sticky, crunchy, chewy, or packed with carbs or sugar. Hard foods can break off brackets, while sticky foods can get stuck under the archwire. Carb and sugar-heavy foods can combine with bacteria to create acids that eat away at tooth enamel, leading to cavities and disastrous consequences for your treatment.
