Orthodontics Exclusively & UC Merced: We Go Way Back
One of the Central Valley’s crowning achievements was the selection of a 10th U.C. Campus in the City of Merced. As one of the founding board members, I will never forget the day the campus broke ground or its first graduation. (At the time U.C. Merced was so small that they asked members of the trustee board to be part of the graduation delegation so that the number of people in the graduation procession was bigger than the actual number of folks who graduated.)

The campus in Merced has profoundly changed this area in many ways and one of the things our practice has done for U.C. Merced is we have partnered with their Pre-Dental program to allow their students to intern in our office. When the students intern with us we actually teach them and we offer them the opportunity to work the necessary hours they need so they can meet the requirements of many dental schools, which is 100 hours of working in a dental office. We teach the students skills they will need when they start dental school such as how to pour up study models, make retainers and how to use a hand piece. For many of these students this is their first time working in a dental office.
I am proud to say that our last three student interns have been accepted into dental programs with one in her second year and another in her first year. Our latest intern just completed the interview process and will most likely be starting dental school in the fall.

My dad and I enjoy the students, and on a personal level, it has been very satisfying for me to watch the campus grow and change. I am still involved at U.C. Merced but not at the level I was ten years ago. On our website we will be adding a spot for all U.C. Merced students, faculty and employees. For any new patients who are employed at the University or are students, we also offer a 5% discount. In addition, many employees who work for U.C. Merced actually have up to $2,000 in orthodontic insurance.
